Until recently the scientific community in Korea has avoided engaging with the creationists in fear that doing so might boost the credibility of the group. But silence is no any longer an option.

The STR has been battling to get rid of textbooks that discuss evolution, such as the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an early bird’s ancestor. This is only one example of how the development paradigm has evolved.

What is Evolution?

Evolution is a concept in science that explains the evolution of genetic traits over time. The theory is based on fact that living things adapt to their environment which can result in changes in genes, or even entire genomes. These changes can over many generations lead to the creation of new species. Natural selection is the most popular theory of evolution. It explains how people with advantageous traits are more likely to reproduce and survive than those with disadvantageous ones. In time, this disparity in reproduction could lead to the emergence of completely new species.

The word “evolution” is derived from Latin for unrolling or revealing has been used in a variety of different ways as the concept has evolved in both science and in other fields. Early evolutionists, such as Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather), believed that existing species transformed into other species in a predetermined fashion. The term”transmutation” was coined by Lamarck’s disciple embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint Hilaire, to describe this idea. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, challenged the concept of evolution and borrowed the term from Geoffroy’s student.

More recently evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process when living creatures develop characteristics that improve their chances of survival or the ability to reproduce offspring. As time passes this genetic variation can cause the emergence of entirely new biological functions or physical traits in a population. Natural selection is the mechanism that triggers the most evolutionary changes. Non-genetic changes, such as an increase in muscle mass through exercise or diet, cannot be considered to be evolutionary because they aren’t passed down to future generations.

Despite the fact that evolution has withstood the test of time and a multitude of scientific experiments Creationists have taken advantage of the idea that evolution is controversial to claim that it shouldn’t be taught in schools. In South Korea, creationists won a few victories against evolution in high school textbooks. This includes the removal of all references about the evolutionary history of humans and Archaeopteryx – a feathered dino that is believed to be the ancestor of birds.

Why is Evolution Important?

Evolution explains how Earth and all living species came to be. It also serves as a basis of biology, and aids scientists to learn how living organisms function and grow. Evolution also reveals the relationships between species. Scientists study evolution to better comprehend nature and make important discoveries such as new treatments.

The evidence for evolution is overwhelming. No other scientific theory explains as much about the universe and life on this planet. It has been rigorously scrutinized and confirmed for a number of years. Many people, even some religious leaders, are in support of the scientific theory. It is important to remember that evolutionary biology does not interfere with religious beliefs since it only deals with physical objects, events and processes.

Many religious people have discovered a way to reconcile evolution with their beliefs. Certain Christians for instance believe that God created everything through evolution and that humans have an ancestral connection to other animals.

It is important that science educators advocate for the teaching of evolution. In certain countries, the anti-evolution movement has been rising. In the United States some states have taken measures to restrict teaching of evolution. In South Korea, a group called the Society for Textbook Revise (STR), an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research is urging the removal of textbook content on the evolution of horses as well as the avian ancestor Archaeopteryx.

While these are troubling developments, it is also important to remember that the evidence for evolution is overwhelming. The evidence comes from a wide range of sources, such as fossils, genetic studies, and the behavior of living organisms. Other scientists independently confirm the evidence.

The vast majority of scientists agree with the theory of evolution. The reasons for this support are diverse. Certain scientists study evolution in order to make practical discoveries, such as developing medications and other treatments, while others are driven by an interest in improving the quality of life for animals and plant species, generally to benefit humans. Some are simply curious, and others have a profound faith in God and seek to understand how the universe functions.

What is Creationism?

Creationists believe that God created everything in the universe. They also believe that the Bible is the word of God and should be taken literally. Many creationists are Christians, but not all. Creationists are generally divided into two groups: Young Earth Creationists (YEC) or old earth creationists.

The most popular type of creationist is known as the YEC. They believe that God created the universe exactly in the manner described in the Bible. They believe that the biblical account of the six days of creation is literal and that the universe and the life on Earth started only recently.

OECs might not be as well-known, but their beliefs are just as fierce like those of YECs. OECs believe that the universe and all life on Earth are billions of years old and they believe that evolution is a myth.

Both forms of creationism deny that scientific theories such as natural selection and abiogenesis are able to explain the origin of life on Earth. They argue that evolution isn’t possible because it requires the creation of a miracle, and the founders of modern science shied away from miracles due to fear of losing credibility.

Some creationists believe in both naturalistic evolution and special creation, and refer to their belief “theistic evolution.” This is sometimes also known as “continuous creationism” or “evolution from the original species.” The theory says that God creates original species and then allows them to evolve over time. These evolutionary changes eventually will result in new species that are similar to the original.

Other creationists believe that God created the universe and all living things in a single event, known as the Great Flood. These creationists believe that the original species were all created at the same time, and that they grew gradually afterward. They reject the idea of abiogenesis and assert that self-replicating life can’t come from non-living matter.

In general, creationists are against teaching evolution at schools. Numerous professional organizations like the National Science Teachers Association and the Association for Science Teacher Education are in support of this view and so do the American Anthropological Association and the Geological Society of America. Some academic institutions and scientists, however, are more flexible and allow both creationism and evolution to be included in their curricula.

What is Creationism?

When people think about the concept of creationism, a lot think of the United States. However, South Korea is also the home of an anti-evolutionist movement. The publishers of high-school textbooks announced last week that they would eliminate references to evolution in their editions. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent organization that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR) is the one who has led this drive. STR has achieved its first victory by taking away instances of the evolution of the horse as well as an avian ancestor, the Archeopteryx, from textbooks. The next step is to remove excerpts from Darwin’s infamous finch-research as well as on human evolution.

STR claims to have the backing of 4,000 families as well as individual members. Its mission, it states, is to rid the world of what it calls “atheist materialism” that paints an image of students as being negative. It also hopes to combat the influence of American creationists who live in the US. A survey of trainee biology teachers found that about half do not believe in evolution. The root causes are unclear, but may include religious beliefs or the absence of full-time creation scientists in the United States.

The KACR accomplished a number of things through its seminars and lectures in the past. It publishes a bimonthly news magazine, Creation, and has published books. One of them was a textbook on natural sciences with a cosmological perspective. This led to an interest in the college community. In 1991 an academic and minister started teaching Creation Science in one university, and it continues to be taught to this day.

On August 6-7 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. The event was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six lecturers from abroad, including ICR’s John Morris and Steven Austin, spoke to a crowd of more than a thousand. KACR members and KACR have also given lectures on creation science in prestigious seminaries. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center in the future.
